Based on his observations of Bees’ natures, Lorenzo Langstroth, 6th Pastor of the 2nd Congregational Church in Greenfield, patented his moveable frame bee hive in 1850; it still modeled-after. An original is on exhibit at the McCarthy Funeral Home (once the Greenfield HS for Young Ladies where he was also its last principal). His popular book, Langstroth's Hive and the Honey-Bee, is still in print! Since 1928, the Franklin County BeeKeepers has met monthly, where the many backyard beekeepers and more professional apiarists meet to exchange information on keeping the bees healthy. With their help, and that of the community, a bee fest is held annually in Greenfield's town center and county-wide organizations are sponsoring efforts to provide enticing habitats for the pollinators.
