People in the county love being outside in the winter. Snowshoeing and cross country skiing are favored activities. Local snowmobilers often help make trails, even marking them with bark signs warning of buried streams, roots and other possible hazards. There are also larger retreat centers that specialize in cross country skiing, and Berkshire East in Charlemont that features down hill skiing and snowboarding.
